Game #30: Annie

This Game will Curl Your Hair

Picture
There are currently two movie versions of the hit Broadway musical “Annie”, with a third in production starring Quvhenzhane Wallis as the title character. I totally want to play this game with the upcoming remake, but some attention should be paid to the very first (and what looks to be the very worst) adaptation.

Made in 1982, this “Annie” is the very definition of cheeseball. At least, that’s what you come away remembering. With several songs that were made just for the movie, some hamtastic performances by children and adults alike, and a fuzzy understanding of what translates well from stage to screen, this movie manages to split critics right down the middle in terms of its merit. However, upon watching it again, we rediscovered some pretty dark storytelling elements, as well as some incredibly dated conventions, and we can proudly say…we’re still pretty split. Some aspects of this movie are marvelous. Some make you want to gouge your eyes out. It’s your standard three star movie.

What this movie does have plenty of is heart, and some serious effort went into its creation. A lot of it does NOT pay off. That’s where the alcohol comes in. At least you know that you’ve got a great drinking buddy in Ms. Hannigan.

Game #29: Casablanca

Need We Say More?

Picture
Ah, Casablanca. I can think of no better way to round out the classic movie binge we've been on than with Casablanca. Everyone has seen at least part of this movie. We were shown in in school, it was given to us by parents. I was sat down by instructors and told this was one of the most important movies I would ever see. And it's true, but I did not fully comprehend that at the time.

What ultimately makes Casablanca special is the insane amount of passion present in every word spoken and every shot framed. The movie wasn't expected by anyone to be anything special. It was a romance set in wartime, and the story is an old one. But the cast of thousands, the undeniable chemistry between Bogart and Bergman, and the elegant blend of humor and painful, chest-gripping sadness made this movie a treasure. It will remain a classic for the rest of time.

We went into this game fully expecting to sob like children. So how long did we hold out? I'm ashamed to say, not long enough.

Game #28: Psycho

The Mother of All Drinking Games

Picture
Take a look at the above image. Now imagine seeing that after downing five-plus mixed drinks in the course of two hours. We nearly wet ourselves.

We continue the movie classics binge we've been on lately with one of the most famous horror movies of all time, and probably the first movie you think of when you hear the name "Hitchcock." Psycho is such a diabolically good movie. Every second is so carefully plotted. Every beat is lived through. Not all that much actually happens during the movie, but every scene forwards the plot and builds an increasingly high level of intrigue and tension. And let's not forget the transformation the movie goes through at its halfway point, bringing audiences the most memorable and most often parodied twist cinema has ever seen.

You would think that knowing what's going to happen would make a movie LESS scary. Far from it; our apprehension only grew thicker. The alcohol managed to dull our senses, but it only sharpened our screams.

Yeah. Our neighbors hate us.
